Food Ministry Not In Favour Of More Rice Exports Immediately |
The Food Ministry today said it is not in the favour of allowing immediate export of additional quantity of non-basmati rice.
Recently, the government had allowed export of 1 million tonnes at minimum export price of USD 400 a tonne.
"Not now. Let us look at the situation. We have already allowed one million tonne export of non-basmati rice. Let us see the reaction in the market,"Food Minister K V Thomas told reporters here.
He was replying to a question on whether the Food Ministry is in favour of more rice exports in view of upward revision in rice production in 2010-11 and higher stocks in the government godowns.
Thomas said before taking any decision on extra rice exports"we will study internal situation and global scenario because tomorrow we cannot import foodgrains. It is difficult"
The Agriculture Ministry has recently revised upward rice output for 2010-11 crop year (July-June) to 95.32 million tonnes from 94.11 million tonnes for the same period.
