Govt allows 5 lakh tonnes non-basmati rice export to B''desh |
New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) Relaxing an export ban on diplomatic ground, India has allowed export of five lakh tonnes of non-basmati rice to Bangladesh which has to source the grain from private traders in the open market.
"The communication was sent to the Bangladesh government last week. We have intimated them to purchase the grain from the open market," Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas told reporters here.
India has banned export of non-basmati rice since April 2008 in the wake of high food inflation, which is still hovering at 8.60 per cent. However, the Centre has been acceding to Bangaladesh request for foodgrain supply in the last two years.
According to the official estimates, the country''s production is expected to be 80.41 million tonnes in the 2010-11 kharif season. India is targeting a total of 102 million tonnes of rice output this year.
