India Resumes Rice Export Through Benapole |
Benapole, Sept 12 —Rice export from India through Benapole land port has resumed after nearly three and a half year's hiatus.
Following the withdrawal of ban on Sunday, some 770 tonnes have been shipped in until Monday, officials said.
The ban over rice export-import was imposed on Mar 27, 2008 by the Indian commerce ministry.
Customs officials said that trucks carrying at least a thousand tonnes of rice were still waiting at the Petrapole land port on the other side of the border.
Petrapole Port Customs Clearing Agent-Staff Welfare Association general secretary Kartik Chakrabarty said trade resumed after the government lifted the ban recently.
Even after the ban, India in 2009 had given away 300,000 tonnes of rice as aid after cyclone Sidr had battered the coastal areas of Bangladesh.
