India's 2010/11 Sugar Output May Fall Below 25 mln T |
India's 2010/11 sugar output may not touch 25 million tonnes as excessive rains hit the cane crop in northern Uttar Pradesh state, a senior industry official said on Thursday.
"Heavy concentrated rainfall affected cane crop in Uttar Pradesh... (India's) production would not be able to touch 25 million tonnes," Vivek Saraogi, managing director of Balrampur Chini Mills(BACH.BO), told investors at a conference call.
A Reuters poll of 10 respondents, including Indian millers and industry associations, forecast an average estimate of 25.8 million tonnes for the current year, sharply higher than last year's 18.8 million tonnes, and more than the 23 million tonnes India consumes per annum.
Saraogi, who also heads the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), said the country will allow sugar exports in tranches.
India can export 2 million to 2.5 million tonnes of the sweetener in 2010/11, he said.
