India's imports of sensitive items grew by 42.8 per cent to Rs 100911 crore during the financial year ended March 2012 as compared to Rs 70656 crore in the previous fiscal year.
An official press release said the gross imports of all commodities during 2011-12 were valued at Rs 2342217 crores as compared to Rs.1683467 crores during the previous fiscal year.
The import of sensitive items constitutes 4.2% and 4.3% of the gross imports during 2010-11 and 2011-12, respectively, the release said.
According to the release, the imports of food grains have declined at broad group level during the period. Imports of all other items such as edible oil, automobiles, pulses, fruits & vegetables (including nuts), rubber, cotton & silk, products of SSI, spices, milk & milk products, alcoholic beverages, marble & granite and tea & coffee have increased during the period, it said.
In the edible oil segment, the import has increased from Rs. 29319.1 crores in 2010-11 to Rs 46309.2 crores in 2011-12.
The imports of both crude oil as well as refined oil have gone up by 53.5% and 85.6%, respectively. The increase in edible oil import is mainly due to substantial increase in import of crude palm oil and its fractions, the release said.
Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Germany, Argentina, Ukraine, South Korea, United States of America, Japan, Thailand, Canada, Myanmar, United Kingdom, Australia, Cote D’ Ivoire, Vietnam soc Republic, Guinea Bissau went up during 2011-12 while those from Brazil and some other countries went down.
