India's Polished Diamond Exports +1% In June |
India’s polished diamond exports rose 1 percent year on year to $2.22 billion in June 2011, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) reported. By volume, polished exports were flat at 5.119 million carats as the average price of the goods grew 1 percent to $434.26 per carat.
Polished imports rose 20 percent to $1.76 billion during the month and the country’s net polished exports, representing the excess of exports over imports, fell 36 percent to $462.1 million.
Rough imports rose 38 percent to $1.59 billion although volume dropped by 15 percent to 13.6 million carats. The average price on India’s rough imports grew 62 percent to $116.86 per carat. Rough exports jumped 66 percent to $151.3 million and net rough exports, representing the excess of imports over exports, grew 36 percent to $1.44 billion.
India’s June net diamond account fell to a deficit of $975.8 million, compared with a deficit of $336.9 million one year ago.
During the first six months of 2011, India’s polished exports rose 30 percent to $15.66 billion, while polished imports grew 62 percent to $12.77 billion. Net polished exports declined by 31 percent to $2.89 billion.
Rough imports rose 29 percent to $7.6 billion and rough exports increased by 65 percent to $771.6 million. Net rough imports grew 26 percent to $6.83 billion. India’s net diamond account for January through June fell to a deficit of $3.94 billion from a deficit of $1.23 billion in the same period of 2010.
