India’s rough diamond exports rise 45% in January 2012 |
In January 2012, India saw a dip in its polished diamond trade. Polished diamond imports dropped 59 percent to $944.93 million and by 52 percent in volume to 1.966 million carats. The country exported polished diamonds worth $1.773 billion or a 19 percent drop on y-o-y basis. The volume of its polished diamond exports fell 37 percent to 3.326 million carats.
The rough diamond exports out of India saw a robust 45 percent increase to $153.27 million, while rough diamond imports rose 7 percent to $1.094 billion.
The country’s net polished diamond exports ( valued as the excess of exports over imports) to be at $828.35 million (the same reflected a deficit of $84.17 million in January 2011). Net rough diamond imports (valued as imports less exports) saw a 3 percent increase to $940.82 million.
At the end of the month, India’s net diamond account (valued as the total of polished and rough exports less the total of polished and rough imports) stood at a deficit of $112.47 million ( in January 2011 the same was in a deficit of $996.39 million).
