Despite recession, Marine products exports from India crossed the US $ two billion mark in the first nine months from April-December in the 2010-11 fiscal, registering a growth of 6.60 per cent in quantity and 18.92 per cent in rupee value.

In dollar terms the growth was 24.70 per cent in US$ realisation comapred o the same period last year, according to the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) here.

From the provisional figures available, the exports crossed US$2.133 billion record of 2009-10 during the first nine months of 2010-11 fiscal.

This is the first time in the history of Marine Products industry, the country was crossing the 2 billion mark within the first 9 months in a financial year, MPEDA said in a press release.

The marine products exports touched 547249 tonnes during April-December 2010-11 while it was 513373 tonnes during the same period last fiscal. Value wise Indian earned rs 9187.18 crore during the period against rs 7725.42 crore during the previous financial year. The earnings in US dollar terms was 2028.58 million in 2010-11 fiscal against 1626.72 million the previous year.

The achievment was in spite of recession in the international market, Rupee becoming stronger, vis-a-vis the Euro and Dollar, the recent collapse of economies in Greece, Spain and Portuguese in the EU causing the depreciation of Euro value agains US$.

Frozen shrimp continued to be the major export item accoufor 48.61 per cent of the total US$ earnings. Shrimp exports during the period incrased by 12.54 per cent, 33.94 per cent and 40.72 per cent in quanity, rupee value and US$ value respectively. There has been a considerable incrase in unit value realsiation (25.04 per cent) also.

Export of frozen shrimp to USA has registered a tremendous growth of 88.12 per cent in volume and 149.05 per cent in US$ terms. Frozen shrimp export to hapan also showend an incrased of 23.55 per cent , 42.74 per cent and 50.74 per cent in volume, rupee value and US$ value respectively.

Export of Vannamei shrimp had also picked up, the MPEDA said adding the country had exported about 7363 tonnes of Vannamei during this period.
