The Indian rupee fell by 12 paise to Rs 51.32 per US dollar in early trade today, weighed down by gains posted by the American currency against other Asian peers overseas amid a weak trend in the domestic equity market.
The domestic unit had closed 26 paise higher at a fresh two-week high of Rs 51.20/21 per US dollar on the Interbank Foreign Exchange in the previous session on Friday amid a rally in the stock market and dollar-selling by exporters and some corporates.
Dealers said weakness of other Asian currencies against the dollar overseas and a lower opening in the domestic stock market mainly put pressure on the rupee in early trade today.
Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex fell by 76.32 points, or 0.45 per cent, to 16,770.51 in opening trade.
