GUWAHATI: The first special economic zone (SEZ) in the North East will come up in Nagaland. The state is setting up an agro and food
processing SEZ.
The state government is optimistic that the SEZ will attract investors in the state which has witnessed law and order problems due to insurgency over the last two decades.
Parliamentary secretary for industries & commerce KC Nihoshe said a number of industrial sectors involved in agro and food processing have indicated interest in establishing units in the SEZ.
Investors from Korea have evinced interest in establishing a ginger processing unit in the SEZ. The Union ministry of commerce and industry notified 50.70 hectare in Ganeshnagar under Dhansiri sub-division in Dimapur district as a Special Economic Zone, on July 9.
The SEZ will be located at Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP) which is non-functional now. Director, industries G Keppen Rengma told ET, The state government and Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (NIDC) will invest around Rs 35 crore in developing the SEZ. We will develop the same as soon as possible.
He added, "We have inked an MoU with a Korean firm. The firm will set up ginger processing units. Several other investors are queuing up to establish units."
NIDC had proposed under Section 3 of the Special Economic Zone Act, 2005 to set up a sector-specific SEZ for agro and food processing sector at Ganeshnagar.
