The four-day Home Expo India 2012, which concluded on Wednesday at the India Expo Centre and Mart here, generated business worth  Rs. 476 crore.

The fair was organised by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH). “Around 600 Indian exporters had displayed their products.

A total of 1,019 people visited the event. Around 70% visitors were from abroad. Exhibitors have got export order worth Rs. 476 crore,” said Rakesh Kumar, executive director, EPCH.

Andhra Pradesh's Narsapur’s lace craft items drew the attention of foreign buyers. “In Andhra Pradesh, around one lakh women artisans from 480 villages are involved in the production of lace craft items. The current order is estimated to be around  Rs. 70 crore, of which around 90% is for exports. The US, Europe and Japan are the major markets,” said Kumar.

In the garment sector, Kashmiri firens wooed the visitors. “These are used mostly in cold countries,” said RK Malhotra, president, Home Expo India 2012.

Other attractions included mulberry silk from Assam. Fabrics of Tripura, which is known for vertical and horizontal strips with scattered embroidery and varied colours, also caught the buyers’ sight. Woollen carpets of Sikkim, handicrafts made of paper and ‘choktse’ (a table) were the other products which attracted the visitors.

“Besides foreign buyers, Indian architects, interior decorators, hoteliers, etc, visited the stalls,” said Malhotra.
