SC Issues Notice to Centre on Marble Import Policy |
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on a petition challenging the government's recent marble import policy on the ground that it was discriminatory towards the granite and stone industry.
A bench of Justices D K Jain and A K Ganguly issued notices on a petition filed by the All India Granite and Stone Association, which alleged that the August 4 notification would benefit a "few large marble producers having their units in particular pockets of the country".
"There is sufficient indication of the fact that the DGFT prescribed such criteria with a mala fide intention to create monopoly of the few select marble processing units in this sector," the petitioner said.
