Sri Lanka to Import Chicken And Eggs From India |
Colombo, (PTI) Sri Lanka is set to receive first ever chicken and egg commercial consignment imported from India to meet shortages in the domestic market ahead of festive season.
Trade ministry officials said they placed an order for 500 tonnes of chicken and 50 million eggs from the same Indian supplier who is sending both together, and just in time for the upcoming Christmas holiday season.
The consignment will reach the country on Tuesday.
A massive shortage of chicken, an upmarket food popular during festive times, prompted the authorities to export from India.
It is the first time that the country is making wholesale imports of chicken and eggs.
The consumption of chicken has also zoomed because of increased tourist arrivals after the end of nearly three decades of ethnic conflict last year.
The number of foreign holiday makers has increased by 43.5 per cent in the first 10 months of this year compared to 2009.
