Subject to Output, Cap on Cotton Exports may Fall |

The Textiles Ministry revealed that if the cotton production in India surpasses the projected 32.5 million bales, it will be beneficial for cotton exports as there are chances of raising the export limit above the current limit of 5.5 million bales this year.
According to Rita Menon – Textiles Secretary, the Ministry would definitely advocate the export of more cotton from India if the production goes beyond 32.5 million bales. However, the cotton requirements of the country’s textile sector have to be considered before allowing exports above the limit of 5.5 million bales.
The textile industry in the country is expected to consume 22 million bales of cotton this year. The government had previously announced that no duty will be imposed on cotton exports up to a limit of 5.5 million bales in the present cotton marketing season.
She further added that, the government will consider whether to impose further restrictions on cotton exports beyond the current limit only after an assessment of the situation in a meeting to be held later this month.
