GUWAHATI: In order to meet the growing demand of the construction sector in Tripura, the state has started importing bricks from neighbouring Bangladesh.
Around 20 brick laden trucks entered the capital city of Tripura through the Akhaura check post along the Indo-Bangladesh in presence of Bangladesh Commerce Minister Muhammad Farukh Khan and Tripura Commerce Minister Jiten Chowdhury on Thursday.
Mr Chowdhury told ET over telephone from Tripura, There is a shortage of 40 Crore bricks annually in the state. Already Bangladesh is exporting stone chips, cement, plastic goods, agro products, readymade garments and frozen foods to Northeast India,
Sources in the industry department added, It will take some time to meet the demand till that time we have to depend on imports. We will ensure that the local brick sector does not get affected due to imports, In January this year a joint task force to promote trade between Bangladesh and Tripura was formed. The body comprises of representative from top government officials and members from various industry body.
