PUNE: The government is mulling to form a task force comprising representatives from all stakeholders to implement the recommendations of the experts at the XIth Spice Congress held here aiming to promote exports of Indian spices, as announced by Dr AS Jayatilak, Chairman, Spices Board of India.
During the conclusion of the Congress, being organised by the Spices Board, Dr Jayatilak, said, “We will form a task force comprising of representatives from all stakeholders - farmers, exporters, Government, and implement the recommendations on priority basis. Our main concern is low productivity due to seed quality.”
He lamented the agriculture budgeting practice and said that States allocate very limited resources for spice farming.
Highlighting the fact, he said that if states and farmers produce export-quality spices, they will get premium above the ruling market price. The assurance should act as an incentive to enhance quality.
The proposed task force will play a vital role in linking farmers, Government departments, regulatory bodies and other stakeholders to circularise awareness about the new international standards and their affect on the Indian spice industry.
