With Sufficient Sugar Production Anticipated, Govt likely to allow Exports |
Amid the speculations on sugar exports, the government may allow sugar exports this season based on its sugar production estimation and the agreement between the agriculture and the food ministeries on the issue.
“We would reveal our decision in the next EgoM (Empowered Group of Ministers) meeting which is likely to be held next week,” an official from the food ministry informed FnB News in a chat over telephone.
Earlier, K V Thomas, minster of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution (independent charge) had said that India could produce 24.7 million tonnes of sugar in the new season .
According to a report, the latest forecast predicts an annual demand of 22 million to 23 mn tonnes and is slightly above the food minister's estimation of 24.7 million tonnes.
