Subject: DGGI detects Rs 1.36 lk cr tax evasion in H1 of FY24
New Delhi: The Directorate General of GST (goods and service tax) Intelligence (DGGI) has detected tax evasion of ₹1.36 lakh crore in the first six months of the current financial year (FY24) and received ₹14,108 crore as voluntary tax payment.

The ₹1.36 lakh crore included 1,040 fake Input Tax Credit (ITC) cases involving ₹14,000 crore. The total evasion in FY23 was ₹1.03 lakh crore.

The DGGI has till date, detected more than 6,000 fake ITC cases involving more than ₹57,000 crore GST evasion with the arrest of 500 persons from April 2020 to September 2023.

In the current fiscal year alone, a total of 91 fraudsters were apprehended.

Officials said that the drive against fake invoices and data analytics was helping the authorities detect evasion
"Cases have been unraveled using data analysis, aided by advanced technical tools which has lead to the arrest of tax evaders," the finance ministry said in a statement.

The GST authorities launched the two-month anti-evasion exercise on May 16 and about 10,000 fake registrations were detected in the first week itself.
