DGFT defers NPOP date for Indian organic textile exports |
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in a statement said it has deferred till further orders the procedure it had mandated earlier, to export organic cotton made textiles.
Earlier, the DGFT had mandated a December 18, 2014 implementation deadline, outlining that any product exported as an ‘organic product’ will be required to be certified to the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP).
Earlier, certification was only mandatory for exports of organic cotton, but on November 18, DGFT extended certification of organic exports to include textile products, like yarn, fabrics, garments, etc.
Fibre2fashion had earlier reported on December 18, that the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) has urged the responsible Indian authorities to reconsider the December 18, 2014 implementation deadline.
GOTS urged to defer the date set for NPOP certification for organic textile exports in order to allow the Indian export industry to adapt to the new legal requirements in a realistic timeframe.
GOTS had suggested that the implementation deadline for NPOP certification be extended by twelve months, so that current exports are not hampered and Indian exporters can continue their organic textile business without interruption.
