Russian President Vladimir Putin’s two-day India visit is being viewed by Indian officials as a major push toward closer economic ties, with both sides preparing to expand cooperation across several key sectors, epecially trade.

Government sources told ANI that discussions are focused on increasing Indian exports, with pharmaceuticals, agricultural goods — including seafood — and automobiles emerging as priority areas.

"The visit will go a long way in strengthening economic co-operation. President Putin is travelling with a large group of businesspeople. India expects to improve the trade deficit with Russia. Multiple avenues being worked out to increase Indian exports to Russia," sources in the Central government told the news agency.

The expectation is that broader access to the Russian market will boost Indian industries, support job growth and deliver gains for farmers and exporters.

After Thursday’s dinner meeting with PM Modi, Putin’s Friday calendar includes a series of high-level engagements.

He will begin the day by paying tribute at Rajghat, followed by a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Summit-level discussions with Prime Minister Modi are scheduled at Hyderabad House, after which the leaders will share a working lunch.

Later, the Russian leader will address business leaders at the India–Russia Business Forum, highlighting opportunities for long-term industrial collaboration and investment. The meeting will focus on deepening cooperation in technology, mining, healthcare, peaceful space exploration, transport and labour mobility.

One of the most significant outcomes of the visit is expected to be the adoption of several agreements, including the “Programme for the Development of Strategic Areas of Russi ..

Beyond trade and strategic documents, the Russian president will also participate in the official launch of the RT TV channel in India—a move seen as strengthening cultural and media linkages between the two countries. In the evening, President Droupadi Murmu will host a banquet in his honour before Putin departs late Friday.
