MUMBAI: The rupee appreciated by 9 paise at 48.61 in early trade today on increased dollar sales by exporters amid expectations of capital inflows by funds as market may open higher in line with firm trends in other Asian equity markets.
Dollar's losses against other currencies also supported the Indian rupee to some extent.
At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the domestic unit was quoted higher at 48.61 a dollar, a gain of 9 paise over the previous close of 48.70/72. Yesterday rupee ended 18 paise stronger after BSE Sensex ended flat after choppy trade.
Among the Asian markets, Japanese share prices opened higher today with the benchmark Nikkei-225 index rising 71.48 points to 9,362.52 in early morning trade.
