MADC finally signs lease deed with Concor |
Nagpur: Almost a year after the stone laying ceremony was held for a rail terminal at Mihan, to be built by Container Corporation of India (Concor), Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), signed a lease deed with the latter for transfer of 109 acres land for the project on Thursday. So far there has been much development on the special economic zone (SEZ) at Mihan but cargo hub-- the very concept on which the project was based— did not see light of the day.
Mihan stands for Multimodal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur and it was originally planned to have a Centre for cargo movement through air, rail, and road. However, after an earlier deal to set up a rail and road terminal with Sical Ltd failed, MADC went ahead with Concor, an Indian Railways subsidiary, for a similar facility. The final lease deed and handing over the land was held up due to lack of clarity on availability of a part of the land. Even as rest of the area was clear, a small patch came under the route of proposed metro rail. Concor was waiting for the issue to be resolved, said a source in MADC.
According to senior marketing manager in MADC S Sittarasu, the problem has been finally solved. Concor's tracks for moving the cargo container trains shall go over a bridge with an underpass for the metro rail. Another source in MADC said the land where both the projects intersect each other is located near Khapri village. However, the portion concerned is not more than 25 to 30 metres in length.
Sittarasu added that since the documents were signed, Concor could go ahead with the work. It is expected that the project may come up within a year. The agency will also be shifting its operations from the existing inland container depot (ICD) in the city.
When the stone was laid for this project in February along with that of Infosys Ltd, it was estimated that Concor would create 2,500 indirect jobs. The space available in Mihan, besides the proposed rail terminal, is expected to boost the logistics business attracting warehousing and cold storage units in the vicinity. Having a container depot close by can also attract manufacturing units that generate high volume cargo to Mihan-SEZ, said a source in MADC.
