Govt probes dumping against polypropylene imports.

Date: 16-03-2010
Subject: Govt probes dumping against polypropylene imports

India has initiated a probe to check dumping of a chemical from the US, South Korea and Taiwan, used to manufacture woven sacks for cement and sugar.

Acting on an application filed by Reliance Industries Ltd on behalf of the domestic industry on the alleged dumping of 'Polypropylene' from the three aforementioned countries, the Directorate General of Anti-dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD) has initiated an anti-dumping probe.

"After finding evidences of dumping of the goods...The DGAD has initiated investigation," the Commerce and Industry Ministry has said. The period of investigation for the purpose is from July 2008 to June 2009.

Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd and Reliance Petroleum Ltd have also supported the application.

India has slapped anti-dumping duty on several items such as yarn, fabrics, certain stainless steel products, auto parts and chemicals.

As many as 15 anti-dumping duties have been imposed in the first 11 months of the current fiscal with the maximum on Chinese goods.

The government organises workshops from time to time to sensitise export promotion councils and apex chambers of trade and industry representatives on the issues of anti-dumping.

Countries initiate such a probe to see whether their domestic industries have been hurt because of a surge in cheap imports of certain goods or dumping. As a counter measure, they impose duties within the multilateral regime of the WTO on these products.
